Introduction
Are All Saw Blades Essentially the Same? Exclusive Interview with BATIOPV Engineers | Top Circular Saw Blades for Woodworking & Metal Cutting
Are all saw blades essentially the same? How important is saw blade quality to cutting results, and how can we extend the service life of saw blades? We conducted an exclusive interview with R&D Engineer Jim and Product Manager Jim·Vorster to explore these interesting questions in depth.
Why Is Saw Blade Quality So Critical? Isn’t a High-Quality Saw Sufficient?
Jim: Unfortunately, it really isn’t enough. The performance ceiling of a saw is entirely determined by the supporting saw blade used. As one of the core functional components of a circular saw, the saw blade comes into direct contact with the workpiece. Therefore, no matter how good the equipment is, only by matching it with a high-quality and suitable saw blade can the best cutting effect be achieved. We are well aware of this, which is also the core focus of our R&D work, and we have invested a lot of energy in this regard.
What Key Factors Need to Be Considered in Saw Blade R&D? What Are the Current Industry Trends?
Jim: Our R&D work is closely carried out around customer needs and overall market trends. We have benefited a lot from the close cooperative relationship established by application engineers maintaining regular communication with customers.
Jim: The current trend is that the cutting width and base thickness are constantly becoming thinner. The reason is that the energy provided by the battery pack of lithium-electric equipment is limited. By reducing the cutting force, we strive to improve the operating efficiency per meter of cutting, and achieve higher cutting efficiency with the existing power of the battery pack. Simply put: thinner saw blades mean longer cutting time and faster cutting speed. The biggest difficulty in R&D is the problem of circular saw blade wobble and runout.
What Is “Wobble and Runout”? Can You Explain It to Us in Detail?
Jim: When the thickness of the saw blade base is reduced, its rigidity drops sharply in a non-linear manner. During the cutting process, the circular saw blade will be deformed by lateral force. At high feed speeds, the saw blade may get stuck or skew in the kerf. The typical characteristics of this problem are skewed cutting end faces and burn marks on the workpiece and saw blade. This phenomenon is called wobble and runout, which can directly lead to saw blade scrapping in severe cases. Wear will aggravate this problem, while extending the service life, optimizing the tooth angle and tooth group arrangement can effectively suppress this phenomenon.
How Long Does It Take to Develop a Brand-New Circular Saw Blade?
Jim: The production of the first batch of samples takes about two to three months, and the samples are manufactured according to mass production processes. It should be noted that under the current strict standard requirements, saw blades have become high-tech products. For us, the core assessment indicators are exactly the characteristics concerned by customers, such as cutting quality, as well as key performance parameters such as maximum cutting force, wobble and runout, and wear degree. At present, these indicators can only be determined through experiments. We use cutting-edge technologies such as computer simulation, combined with laboratory microscope detection and other means, to assist the R&D process. At the same time, we also focus on efficient chip removal and optimized noise reduction effect to improve the user experience.
“When you choose BATIOPV saw blades, you can rest assured that you will definitely get excellent cutting results.”
— Jim·Guic, R&D Engineer of BATIOPV
How Do You Specifically Evaluate Cutting Quality During Testing?
Jim: A subjective evaluation method is adopted. We make cutting samples under constant working conditions and compare them with standard reference samples. The evaluation is jointly completed by the Product Management Department, Application Engineering Department, R&D Department and Testing Department. Then we will conduct a detailed analysis of the experimental data to iterate and optimize the saw blade design. According to different models, it is often necessary to trial-produce up to three generations of prototypes until the saw blade performance and processing effect meet the expectations and the R&D goals are completed. We always develop saw blades and saws synchronously to achieve perfect adaptation.
How Long Does It Take from Metal Blank to Finished Saw Blade? Which Processes Are Particularly Critical or Unique?
Jim: Before laser cutting, the base material must have extremely high flatness and thickness uniformity. BATIOPV only uses laser cutting for saw blades, not stamping process. After laser cutting, the base needs to be put into a furnace for hardness control, and usually thermal leveling is performed again. When brazing the cemented carbide blank to the base, the heat input must be strictly controlled; excessive temperature will cause deformation of the base. Subsequent processes include shot peening and grinding of the saw teeth, polishing and engraving of the base, and anti-corrosion treatment.
How to Extend the Service Life of Saw Blades? Can Saw Blades Be Resharpened?
Jim: The tooth height reserve of BATIOPV saw blades is 0.3 mm, which can be resharpened up to eight times. A single resharpening costs about 20 euros, which is very cost-effective. Resharpening process is very important to us, aiming to allow customers to use our saw blades as long as possible. However, both the front and back edges of the saw teeth need to be ground during resharpening. After eight resharpenings, the tooth height reserve is insufficient, and the saw blade needs to be replaced. We will select suitable cutting materials according to the application scenario of the circular saw blade.
As a User, What Other Ways Can We Extend the Service Life of Saw Blades?
Jim: If you want to extend the service life of the saw blade, there are several points to note. For saw blades used in processing abrasive materials, we use wear-resistant but relatively brittle cemented carbide; for woodworking saw blades, cemented carbide with stronger toughness is usually selected. To achieve the longest service life, it is necessary to select a suitable circular saw blade for the corresponding working condition. We also recommend using special saw blades for specific working conditions: for example, high-pressure fireproof board processing requires a sharp cutting edge. If the same saw blade is used to cut highly abrasive laminate, the cutting edge will be quickly dulled and can no longer be used for high-pressure fireproof board cutting. Using special saw blades for different working conditions can greatly extend the service life of circular saw blades. Where working conditions permit, the cutting quality of the upper and lower surfaces of the workpiece can also be optimized by adjusting the cutting depth.
BATIOPV often says that its solutions are “Perfectly Synergistic” — what does this specifically mean for saws and saw blades?
Jim: When developing saw blades, we customize the tooth angle, number of teeth and cemented carbide model for our own equipment and various customer application scenarios. Features such as the number of expansion slots, chip pocket design and variable tooth pitch also affect the processing effect. To this end, we test a large number of samples and benchmark saw blades for cutting quality, performance, wobble and runout, and wear degree. This means that every saw blade you get is perfectly matched with the corresponding equipment. It is the synergy of the whole system that creates the ultimate processing effect.
What Are the Advantages of BATIOPV Circular Saw Blades Compared with Other Brands? What Are Your Core Selling Points?
Jim: The core selling point of BATIOPV circular saw blades is that they are specially developed, calibrated and synergistically adapted for our equipment. This perfect matching enables the saw blade to achieve extraordinary cutting performance. Choose BATIOPV saw blades, and you will surely get outstanding cutting results.
What Is Your Outlook on the Future of the Industry? Is There Still Room for Innovation in This Mature Product?
Jim: I believe that the R&D of saw blades is far from reaching the end. Take the TS(C) 55 saw blade as an example: in the past five years, the cutting width has been reduced from 2.2 mm to 1.8 mm. At the same time, the material of the plates to be processed is constantly iterating, and the wear resistance of the plate surface is one of the key influencing factors, which also requires the synchronous upgrading of cutting tools. For the processing of such plates, harder cemented carbide cutting materials, even polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tooth edges, can be selected to minimize saw blade wear. The scoring saw blade of the TSV 60 K saw is an excellent case: this plunge-in circular saw first cuts the surface layer of the plate with the scoring saw, and then the main saw blade completes the overall cutting. The scoring process has realized double-sided chip-free cutting of portable plunge-in circular saws for the first time. The scoring teeth mainly cut the hard and wear-resistant surface layer of the plate, while the main saw blade does not touch the surface layer. We initially tested samples with cemented carbide edges, but under such extreme working conditions, as soon as the edge wears, the coating will chip after cutting a few meters. However, we have achieved excellent results by using PCD material in single-edge and double-edge tools. Although PCD is more expensive, its cost-performance advantage is significant: the highly wear-resistant edge allows customers to achieve hundreds of meters of surface chip-free cutting.
Jim: The only constant in innovation is change itself. We firmly believe that the R&D of processing technology is endless. New materials, technological progress and new processing technologies will promote continuous innovation. Whether the industry will ultimately pursue extreme performance improvement or usher in disruptive innovation will be decided by the market. BATIOPV is determined to be a leader in these innovations. At this moment, we are advancing several major R&D projects, which unfortunately cannot be disclosed in detail at present.
